What is the APA on a yacht charter?
The APA, or Advance Provisioning Allowance, is the way running costs are handled on a crewed charter. The charter fee itself covers the yacht and its crew; the APA is a separate sum, typically around twenty-five to thirty-five per cent of the charter fee, lodged with the captain before departure to cover fuel, food, drinks, berths in port and anchoring fees. The captain spends from it on your behalf during the charter and keeps the accounts, and at the end any unspent balance is returned to you while any overspend is settled. It means the day-to-day costs of the trip are transparent and paid at real cost rather than marked up. For a simple day-boat the logic is lighter — often just a day rate with fuel sometimes on top — but for weekly crewed charters the APA is standard practice across the industry, and we set out exactly how it works in your quote.
How many cabins and guests can a weekly charter yacht sleep?
It depends entirely on the yacht. A smaller crewed yacht might sleep six guests in three cabins, a mid-size motor yacht eight to ten in four or five cabins, and a superyacht twelve guests or more across spacious en-suite cabins, which is the usual maximum for a private charter under the standard rules. The configuration matters as much as the number: a layout with a master suite, double cabins and a twin or bunk cabin suits a family with children, while couples travelling together are better served by several equal double cabins. Crew sleep in separate quarters and do not count toward the guest cabins. French VAT at 20% applies to a charter in French waters; the customary MYBA gratuity is 5 to 15%.
Do I need a boat licence to charter a yacht in Cannes?
Not for a skippered or crewed charter: the professional captain holds the qualifications and runs the boat. A licence recognised in France is only required if you charter bareboat and skipper the boat yourself.
